Custom desktop computers

For home users, Packet Networks offer computers configured to suit their purpose. We see no reason for customers to spend money on the latest hardware for a computer that will mostly be used as a typewriter, e-mail client and web-browser. On the other hand, Packet Networks can build up a serious bleeding-edge gaming rig for the discerning gamer.

Windows or Linux?

Notebooks and netbooks

We prefer to supply Asus notebooks, but can also supply Acer, HP, Toshiba, Samsung and Leader notebooks and netbooks at competitive prices.

Delivery

Computers purchased in Adelaide for home use include delivery and basic set-up.  For customers outside of Adelaide delivery is available, but not included in the cost.  Notebooks are supplied in the original manufacturer’s state.  If you would like us to configure it for you, there will be an additional charge.

Other computer systems

A valuable addition to your home theatre system is a HTPC (home theatre PC). Record and time-shift live TV, schedule recordings that update automatically when TV stations change their schedules, play MP3s, DivX videos and DVDs. HTPCs can be controlled using a standard remote control and a simple infra-red receiver, or over WiFi or Bluetooth and a compatible telephone, eliminating the need for keyboards and mouses.

Other services

Packet Networks specialise in configuring wireless access points for home users, taking special care to ensure strong encryption is used to prevent unauthorised users gaining access to files and bandwidth.  Please e-mail for a quotation for supply, installation and configuration of wireless networking hardware.

We also configure and install most peripherals.  Please email or telephone for a quotation.

ADSL Health Checks

If your ADSL connection isn’t as fast as you think it should be, or you are experiencing dropouts, it might be that your modem is developing faults, the internal wiring in your house is damaged, or your filtering isn’t correctly applied.  The first step would be to follow our basic guide to ADSL filtering. If you still experience problems with your ADSL, an ADSL health check will be able to diagnose where the problem lies.

If you are unsure how fast your internet actually is, and approximately how fast it should be, use www.adsl2exchanges.com.au to get an estimate on your line-speed, and then speedtest.net to assess how fast your internet connection actually is. Remember that line-speed is generally given in bits per second, and download speeds given in bytes per second. There are 8 bits to a byte, so divide your line-speed by 8 to give a theoretical download speed.  Your real download speed will be lower than the theoretical value, but it is a good indicator for the health of your ADSL.

We are offering a special for on-site ADSL health checks this summer.  $50 for a comprehensive inspection of your house telephone wiring with options for repair or modification to improve the connection. This offer is valid to premises within 15km of Kensington, South Australia. Outside of this area, travel costs apply.
