New processors from Intel
Intel released the Core i3 processor earlier this year. The i3 is a dual-core processor that is a perfect base for a budget system with good upgrade potential as the i3 shares the same socket as the more powerful Core i5.
At the other end of the spectrum the Core i7-980X, a 3.33GHz 6-core processor – enough power to edit videos, play games and render 3D scenes all at once – was released in March.
Ubuntu 10.04 “Lucid Lynx”
Ubuntu continues to impress with this Long Term Support (LTS) release of Ubuntu, replacing the previous LTS version 8.04 “Hardy Heron”. Updates are promised for the desktop version of Ubuntu 10.04 for 3 years, and 5 years for the server edition.
Donated computers!
Thank you to the donor of 5 full computers including LCDs, keyboards, mice and operating systems. These machines have been picked up and taken to Mt. Gambier where they will be used as part of an education process for refugees. When the students finish the course they get to take the computer home giving them a great start for ongoing education.
Please email info@packetnetworks.com.au if you have any old hardware that could be used, or if you know of anyone who could benefit from a computer.
Office 2010
Office 2010 is on its way. To be released in June, 2010, Office 2010 promises improved usability and a updated user-interface. For machines running Vista and Windows 7 in 64-bit, a 64-bit version of Office 2010 will be available.
SPAM filtering
Packet Networks offers cloud-based SPAM filtering for organisations hosting their own mail servers using GFI’s MaxMail service. The filter accurately detects SPAM email and emails containing attached viruses. Emails containing viruses do not get delivered to the server, greatly reducing the risk of infection.
The service also acts as a mail-continuity service, where if your server goes offline for whatever reason, the email will queue up on GFI’s servers until your server is ready to receive emails again. Queued emails can be viewed, and it is possible for users to log into the GFI site and send emails.
